(7-11 year olds) Reading this story, it is amazing how many children identify with rebellious Ruth. In her struggle to overcome her fiery and selfish spirit, she is led to discover a Very Important Shepherd, who can and does teach her how to change for the good. The story carries a very powerful message- conquering the fear of death- as it deals very sensitively with the death of a child. The video is a wonderful accompaniment, although it finishes before the story ends in the book, which rather saddened Patricia as she would have preferred the book's happy ending. (7-11 year olds) Set in Morocco, where Patricia lived for 30 years, this is a beautiful, gripping story, full of adventure and the triumph of the human spirit inspired by God. The characters are endearing and wholly credible as Patricia based her stories on real people and events. Although in many ways a "sad" story, it gives real insight into how many in the Third World have to struggle, and raises the challenge "what can I do to help others like Hamid?"
